Human exposure to most bacteria does not result in disease, but rather mammals are colonized for life with 100 trillion indigenous bacteria in a symbiotic relationship that contributes to human health. Indeed, the microbiome regulates the development and function of the immune, metabolic, and nervous systems. The mechanistic basis for how commensal microbes influence health and disease remains incompletely understood, but a revolution is currently underway to deepen our comprehension of the microbiota and its influence on human biology.
Our laboratory has shown that specific molecules produced by gut bacterial communities enter the circulation and travel to the brain, and mediate behavioral abnormalities, motor deficits, neuro-inflammation, and brain pathologies. We have discovered that gut bacteria regulate symptoms and pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) in animal models, and some of this work is now being translated to humans.
I am delighted to be giving the opening keynote address at the Microbiome & Probiotic R&D & Business Collaboration Forum: USA. Speakers will be showcasing their amazing work that has uncovered mechanisms of interaction between beneficial bacteria and a range of health conditions. Some of these research programs are on the doorstep of, or already in, clinical trials with the potential of creating revolutionary therapeutics to treat human diseases.
I look forward to presenting the talk entitled “Gut-derived Metabolites in a Mouse Model of Anxiety and Autism Spectrum Disorder” on October 19.
See you in San Diego!

×Global Engage is a member of ISLA, a body established to accelerate the event industry transition to a sustainable future. As part of this, we are committed to selecting venues with more sustainable practices.
We have reduced waste by replacing printed documentation with an app. Make sure you have it downloaded to your devices in time for the meeting. Get Agorify on Google Play and Apple App Store.
You will have some great food choices while you are with us but now we have worked with the caterer to increase the proportion of plant-based items. We have also built a plan with the venue to avoid waste through how they serve meals and how any leftovers are processed. Our aim is that you have some great meals, whilst with us, but with less environmental impact by the time you leave.
An international meeting does involve travel but where it is practical, please consider more sustainable alternatives to flying. The app will also have a discussion space to arrange ride shares.
