The potential of nutraceuticals and functional foods to aid and support health has driven-up consumer demand for these products and with it a significant increase in commercial interest. In turn, this has revealed a pressing need for valid information about the health benefits of nutraceuticals. The lack of substantiation underpinning the advertised claims is holding back the industry. Clinical and scientific research performed under best-standard clinical trials is needed.
While pharmaceutical products are strictly regulated and require governmental approval, in many parts of the world nutraceuticals are not governed by the same standards. Word of mouth testimonials and traditional use has supported nutraceuticals sales for a long time. With many small businesses reaping benefits from functional food, large investors and companies have had to put in a lot of effort to generate scientific substantiation for claims such as life-span longevity or weight-loss, as well prioritizing transparency in their marketing messages.
