Open Letter: Emma Taylor, CEO and Founder, Naked Biome

Posted 15th October 2018 by Jane Williams
Dear colleagues.
Acne is the most common skin condition in the USA, affecting 85% of the world’s population over their lifetime and approximately 50 million people in the USA each year.
Typically, moderate to severe acne is treated with a combination of topical creams and antibiotics, specifically tetracyclines. Acne is a multifactorial disease, being impacted by an overgrowth of Proprionibacterium acnes, genetics, hormones, stress and environmental factors. Despite the overwhelming prevalence of acne in the world population, there has been little innovation in the acne space in several decades.
Naked Biome is a translational microbiome therapeutics company, harnessing the foundational knowledge derived from the Human Microbiome Project, to develop topical live biologic therapeutics. Naked Biome has a current focus in acne and has established a drug discovery platform to extensively genotype and phenotype prospective drug candidates using functionally relevant genes that naturally aid in the defence against acne.
Our current focus is on developing antibiotic alternatives to combat global antibiotic resistance, through the development of live biologic therapeutics to treat and prevent acne.
The company has gone from strength-to-strength since its establishment 3.5 years ago: derisking multiple areas of live biologic therapeutic development; GMP manufacturing, securing issued IP, navigating a regulatory path, obtaining human phase IB clinical data and raising sufficient capital to support the above activities, including an investment from LEO Pharma, a global leader in medical dermatology, and we have also participated in the Illumina Accelerator, a business accelerator focused solely on creating an innovation ecosystem for the genomics industry.
Join me in San Diego to hear my upcoming presentation at the 6th Microbiome R&D and Business Collaboration Forum: USA, where I will be discussing the skin microbiome in health and disease. I look forward to meeting you.
Kind regards,
Emma Taylor
