Digital pathology: From over-promising to a reality check

Almost five years ago, the plan to implement a wide-ranging digital pathology approach across the Netherlands began to take shape. As more labs across the country acquire digital pathology capability, with steps to create a strong and accessible image repository and a national image exchange platform, one of the project leaders, Professor Katrien Grünberg, offered an update and spoke of some challenges that still lie ahead.

For over a decade, Memorial Sloan Kettering has implemented digital pathology enterprise system for clinical scanning. Over the years that has evolved significantly. Currently, a lot of our efforts are spent on archive scanning to be available for prospective clinical cases.
Efforts to enable pathologists the ability for primary diagnosis are being explored, and we’re currently validating available systems. There’s always a certain flux in terms of vendor communication and networking, meaning that we’re validating systems for our internal use whether that’s for clinical, education, or research.

But as they learn more, pathologists are finding that their apprehension about going digital is holding them back from reaping significant benefits. They are also discovering that old methods can’t compete against today’s digital solutions.
